There are three main type of English translations. 1)Literal word for word translations (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV), 2) Thought for thought dynamic equivalent translations (NLT, NIV), 3) Paraphrases of an authors opinion (The Message)

Dictionaries – A general definition of what a term means when it is used.
Lexicon – Lists all the times a greek / hebrew word is used and what words in English are used to translate it and their meaning
Concordance – Lists all the times a particular word is used in the Bible in a particular translation
Commentaries – Scholars interpretation of a particular passage after looking at the words and context of a passage, chapter, or book.
